Unit 26

Selection and use of teaching aids

As stated in previous units, extra material used when teaching a foreign language is extremely important  to add variety to the class. Considering that, teaching aids are helpful resources for teachers to improve their teaching and manage the class in a proper way. Hence, teachers should consider the main aims, subsidiary aims and stage aims of a lesson in order to choose suitable aids for students.

During the learning process, teachers can differentiate their students into visual or auditory learners. This is essential when choosing the appropriate aids. For instance, for visual learners the board, overhead projector, DVD player, computer or realia are important visual aids that help students to internalized the information easily. On the other hand, a CD player, language laboratory, and again a computer, play an important role for auditory learners and the input they receive.

As an upcoming teacher, I will add variety to my classes by choosing the aids that meet the students' learning styles. Since students can be classified into different categories, I will consider it in order to plan my classes and choose the correct aids. My teaching will be totally different and student will internalize the information in an easier way.

In conclusion, selecting the appropriate teaching aids is the key to succeed during a class because they give a different point of view to the teaching-learning process. Choosing the correct classroom equipment is important based on the multiple intelligences of the students in the class.

  1. The main aspect to bear in mind when selectig and using an aid is our students´learning styles since each of them are completely different.
