Unit 28

Identifying the functions of learners' language

Exponents are the language that people use according to different language functions. These exponents vary depending on people's needs, age, level or the context. During the teaching-learning process the language used by teachers and students is quite similar. For that reason, it is essential to identify the appropriate language in the class.

The functions could be divided based on the interactions among teacher-students or just students. When it comes to teacher-students, the functions are greeting, negotiating, asking for clarification, instructing, among others. In here, both, teachers and students have to choose the vocabulary that best fits to each situation. On the other hand, when students interact, the functions that they use are interacting, summarizing, self-correcting, acknowledging, etc. The language used with these functions is less formal and shows the cooperative work most of the cases.

In my classes I will focus on the functions in the class since it will help students to develop thier speaking fluency. For example, one of the aims when learning a language is to become communicative competent, and by checking the exponents learners use, I will contribute to their development of their speaking. With time, they will major the language easily.

In conclusion, differentiating students' functions is really important when teaching a new language since the exponents used are different, as well. These functions let teachers and students to interact and have a better management of the class.
